In recent months, Meta-owned WhatsApp has been rolling out a series of updates aimed at enhancing user experience. From implementing a chat lock for the web version to restricting users from taking screenshots of profile photos, WhatsApp is focused on improving its platform. Now, reports from WABetaInfo suggest that WhatsApp is gearing up to introduce cross-platform messaging, allowing users to send messages to apps like Telegram and Signal directly from WhatsApp.
According to the report, WhatsApp is working on an upcoming update labeled version 2.24.6.2, which hints at a feature to manage third-party chats. This move aligns with the Digital Markets Act’s emphasis on chat interoperability to facilitate communication across various applications. WhatsApp had previously announced beta versions, including 2.24.5.18 for Android, showcasing efforts towards chat interoperability.

The latest Whatsapp beta update, 2.24.5.20, reveals It’s active development of a dedicated chat info screen for third-party chats. This screen displays essential details such as default profile photos and the associated third-party app name. Users will have control over which apps can interact with their WhatsApp account, ensuring personalized preferences.
However, there will be certain limitations with third-party chats within WhatsApp. Group chats involving third-party apps and making calls through these apps will not be supported initially. While text messaging will likely be the primary mode of communication, future updates may broaden these capabilities. Additionally, users will have the option to manually activate the interoperability service as it remains an optional feature.
In addition to cross-platform messaging, WhatsApp is also reportedly working on enhancing privacy features. A recent beta for Android introduces a notification alerting users when attempting to screenshot someone else’s profile picture. This privacy measure aims to prevent unauthorized capture of profile images, adding another layer of protection for users.
