Google unveiled nine groundbreaking features for Android devices during the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2024, enhancing user productivity and accessibility. The highlight is the integration of Gemini, Google’s latest AI-powered chatbot, into the Messages app.
Gemini integration in the Messages app allows users to engage in conversations, ask queries, and more directly within a separate chat box. Currently in beta testing, this feature marks a significant expansion of Gemini’s functionality.
Android Auto receives a similar AI-powered feature, enabling the summarization of long texts or group chats and suggesting relevant replies while driving. The Lookout app, designed for visually impaired users, now offers AI-generated captions for images seen online or received through messages, enhancing accessibility globally.

Google Maps introduces Lens in Maps, enabling users to point the phone’s camera at surroundings for TalkBack to read out place information aloud, including business hours and directions. Non-AI features include a tweak to the output switcher for Spotify, allowing users to select the device for sound output directly from the home screen. Moreover, Wear OS users can now integrate data from wearables and apps like Fitbit and MyFitnessPal using the updated Health Connect app.
Google Wallet passes are now accessible on Wear OS smartwatches, offering convenient access to passes. Additionally, Google Maps for Wear OS provides public transit directions, including departure times and compass-guided navigation, facilitating seamless travel experiences.
