This alert comes months after allegations that state-sponsored hackers accessed iPhones of opposition leaders.
The notifications, termed “Threat Notifications” by Apple, are triggered when the tech giant detects sophisticated attacks aimed at a very limited number of individuals, typically journalists, activists, politicians, or diplomats. These attacks are orchestrated by well-funded entities, including state actors and private companies like the NSO Group responsible for Pegasus spyware.
Users who receive such alerts are advised to immediately activate “Lockdown Mode” on their iPhones for enhanced protection against these advanced threats. Additionally, Apple recommends updating iOS versions and enabling Lockdown Mode on all Apple devices to mitigate potential risks.
In case of suspicion but no formal alert, Apple advises users to take precautionary measures such as changing passwords for sensitive websites and services accessed via iPhones. They also suggest seeking expert help from organizations like Access Now’s Digital Security Helpline.
Apple’s notification emphasizes the seriousness of these attacks, which often require no user interaction and can be disguised as convincing messages or links. Users are urged to exercise caution with all communications and avoid clicking on unfamiliar links or attachments.
