Microsoft recently announced its decision to discontinue support for its virtual assistant, Cortana, as a standalone app in Windows, starting in late 2023.
This change specifically applies to Cortana in Windows, and the virtual assistant will continue to be accessible in Outlook mobile, Teams mobile, Microsoft Teams display, and Microsoft Teams rooms, according to a support page provided by the tech giant.
Instead of relying on the Cortana app and clicking its icon to initiate voice-based interactions, Microsoft encourages users to explore alternative tools that cater to their productivity requirements.
In 2021, Microsoft had already revealed its plan to end support for the Cortana app on Android and iOS devices. Originally launched in December 2015, Cortana aimed to bridge the gap between Windows 10 PCs and mobile phones. However, it failed to gain significant traction compared to competitors like Alexa, Google Assistant, and Siri, which emerged as dominant players in the virtual assistant market.
