Apple has acquired Canada-based AI company Darwin AI, as reported. The acquisition aims to enhance Apple’s manufacturing process by utilizing DarwinAI’s technology for component inspection. Notably, several DarwinAI employees have joined Apple’s artificial intelligence division.
DarwinAI’s AI technology specializes in visually inspecting components during manufacturing, serving various industries. Additionally, Alexander Wong, a researcher at DarwinAI, is now the director of Apple’s AI division.
Apple is also gearing up to introduce its own generative AI, capable of writing human-like responses, expected to debut in iOS 18 and macOS 15. This initiative follows the recent launches of Microsoft’s Copilot and Google’s Gemini. Confirming the acquisition, Apple stated, “Apple buys smaller technology companies from time to time.” Apple’s plans include integrating AI features like auto-summarizing and auto-complete into core apps and productivity software.

Furthermore, Apple aims to enhance services like Apple Music by integrating AI for playlist automation. Siri is also slated for an overhaul with AI, aiding AppleCare employees in troubleshooting customer issues.
Rumors suggest Apple is developing its AI chatbot, potentially named Apple GPT, aimed at assisting employees with feature testing, text summarization, and answering queries. CEO Tim Cook emphasized Apple’s commitment to generative AI during the recent shareholder meeting, highlighting its transformative potential in productivity and problem-solving. Apple plans to unveil more about its AI initiatives later this year.
