Google’s Gemini AI, criticized for inaccuracies in image generation, prompts the tech giant to temporarily pause the feature and vow enhancements. The move follows concerns over historical misrepresentations and oversights in diversity and inclusion.
Introduced three weeks ago, Gemini’s image generation feature received backlash for misrepresenting historical figures and cultural contexts. Users flagged issues of over-diversification and historical inaccuracies, prompting Google to take action.
Senior Vice President Prabhakar Raghavan issued an apology, acknowledging the feature’s shortcomings and expressing gratitude for user feedback. He assured users of Google’s commitment to address the concerns and improve the feature.

Gemini’s image generation, built on the Imagen 2 AI model, aimed to counter issues seen in previous products while promoting diversity and inclusion. However, it inadvertently missed the mark, generating images that were inaccurate or offensive.
Raghavan admitted that Gemini’s cautious approach sometimes led to the refusal to answer prompts, even for normal queries. Google plans to rectify these issues through extensive refinement and rigorous testing before resuming the feature.
The temporary pause in Gemini’s image generation reflects Google’s responsiveness to user feedback and commitment to delivering high-quality AI experiences. Moving forward, the company aims to strike a balance between diversity and accuracy in image depiction.
This pause underscores the importance of responsible AI development and continuous improvement in addressing user concerns and maintaining user trust.
