Meta and the Misinformation Combat Alliance (MCA) have announced a groundbreaking initiative to launch a dedicated fact-checking helpline on WhatsApp, aimed at combating the proliferation of deepfakes and AI-generated misinformation. This helpline, set to launch next month, will empower users to identify media generated using artificial intelligence and connect with credible information.
Backed by Meta and an extensive network of independent fact-checkers and research organizations, the initiative will provide users with a platform to flag deepfakes by sending them to a dedicated WhatsApp chatbot. Available in English, Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu, the chatbot will forward user-submitted messages to fact-checkers, industry partners, and digital labs for assessment and verification.

The program adopts a comprehensive “four-pillar approach” comprising detection, prevention, reporting, and driving awareness to address the escalating spread of deepfakes. Meta’s involvement focuses on developing the chatbot, while the Misinformation Combat Alliance works on establishing a central ‘deepfake analysis unit’ to manage incoming messages effectively.
Meta has partnered with 11 independent fact-checking organizations to identify, verify, and review misinformation on the platform. Despite previous efforts to curb misinformation on WhatsApp, the platform continues to grapple with the rampant spread of fake news. The collaboration between Meta and MCA signifies a significant step towards combating this challenge and promoting reliable information dissemination.
